Integrating Business Systems with Office Software

If you are considering migrating to Open Source office software, you will need to find out whether your business systems can integrate with it. Bristol City Council spent months researching the issues with its range of business systems, talking to vendors and Sun about the issues and solutions.

The Open Source Academy has widened this information gathering to include the top vendors in a range of major service areas. You can search the database by vendor or system name, or browse the functional areas to see all suppliers and systems of a specific type.

Most vendors have given us detailed information on whether their systems require office software integration, how it works and whether they can support Open Source office software now, or intend to in the future. There are some gaps, and the information in the database will be expanded and improved over time.

Many systems already use open standards to integrate with office software, and some are specifically developing support for OpenOffice.org and StarOffice. Two of the systems used extensively in Bristol needed work done to achieve integration and have been addressed with the vendors and Sun Microsystems, so as to demonstrate the feasibility of working this way.
