Using StarOffice to handle Government Return spreadsheets
A
possible area of concern for Local Authorities when introducing
StarOffice is the ability to handle the Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
used for data interchange with Government Departments. The spreadsheets
used for these Government Returns include special formatting,
validation checks and macros to make data entry easier, reduce scope
for errors and ensure consistency. With StarOffice Calc it is possible
to open and use Excel spreadsheets, but the question is whether their
special features would be retained in the process.
This report summarises investigations made in Bristol on several Government Returns
