On Thursday March 16th, experts on the use of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in business will converge on Spires Conference Centre, Belfast for an all-island event

Google's European manager of Open Source programmes Zaheda Bhorat will be joining Richard Stallman and Bruce Perens to speak at the event. Her talk on "Google and Open Source", will discuss Google's reliance on FOSS for its own business and its support of FOSS as a community ideal.

Les Timms of Open Source Academy will make a presentation on "Opening the door to Open Source" - where he will describe Birmingham City Council's experience with transitioning a large scale infrastructure to FOSS.

Owen Hughes of Oracle will discuss aspects of FOSS from the point of view of Oracle's business.

These speakers will provide insight into the practical aspects and the challenges of transitioning to FOSS, complementing the discussion of economics of Open Source by Bruce Perens, and Richard Stallman's talk on the strategy which has taken Free Software to where it is today. Stallman will also discuss the legal document which underpins the majority of Free Software: the GNU General Public License (GPLv3).

Zaheda Bhorat, International Manager, Open Source Programmes, Google, said:

"Free and Open Source Software is absolutely central to Google's mission and at the heart of our user experience. Our business, and the infrastructure serving and hosting it, relies on the flexibility and robustness of an Open Source framework".

"We believe the agility afforded by software such as GNU/Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python, PHP and others has been crucial to our growth and continued development. Almost every enterprise can benefit from the adoption of F/OSS. This event provides an excellent opportunity to share key learnings", she added.
